I bought some hay from a neighbor up the road. His family farm is 160 acres bought by his grandfather in 1925. My neighbor’s father purchased the farm in the 1940s from his father for $10 an acre. In equivalent 2024 dollars that would be $142 an acre. My neighbor asked me what his farm is currently worth and I said somewhere around $4250 an acre which is 30 times more than $142 an acre.
Hopefully this helps my non-ag friends understand how difficult it is for anyone attempting to enter farming and ranching. The average age of the American farmer is over 60 years old. Who is going to take their place? We better all figure out how to feed ourselves. If you have land, use some of it to produce food and if you don’t have land figure out how to buy at least a few acres.

You have to improvise on the farm most days. This bull lost the switch of his tail (came to me that way) and with fly season upon us one of our mares gladly gave up some hers. Combined with shoe goo and duct tape we’ll see how it goes.

A couple more. Were under a hay bale. I suspect their goal was to make little black rat snakes. I let them go so they can git ‘er done! 😂
