Every farmer and livestock owner knows that effective pest control is a vital part of protecting animal health. Without preventive measures in early spring and consistent management throughout the season, insects and other pests can spread disease-causing organisms, parasites, and bacteria that threaten livestock health, reduce productivity, and impact overall farm performance.

I'll gladly take the rain here in North Alabama, but all that moisture combined with this summer heat also means more pests. Which also means it's even more important to stay ahead with preventive pest management to protect our livestock.

🐄 Flies - How are y'all controlling them? They can spread bacteria, irritate animals, increase stress, and reduce weight gain.

🦟 Mosquitoes - What are you doing to protect your horses and livestock? Do you vaccinate your horses? Mosquitoes can transmit diseases like West Nile virus and Eastern Equine Encephalitis (EEE).

🕷️ Ticks - Are you using sprays, pour-ons, pasture management, or something else? Ticks can carry diseases such as Lyme disease and anaplasmosis. This year, the Asian longhorned tick was detected on a dog right here in DeKalb County and has the potential to transmit Rocky Mountain spotted fever and Heartland virus.

🐀 Rodents - How are you keeping them out of your barns and feed? They can spread bacteria like Salmonella and contaminate feed and water.

🦝 Wildlife (raccoons, opossums, skunks, armadillos) - Have you had any issues this season? What steps have you taken to keep them away from livestock, especially horses, due to the potential spread of Equine Protozoal Myeloencephalitis (EPM)?

Every backyard cookout, lake trip, family gathering, and peaceful moment we enjoy today was made possible because someone else paid the ultimate price.
It is perfectly fine to enjoy time with family and friends this weekend, but Memorial Day should also cause us to pause and think deeply about sacrifice, duty, courage, and love of country.
