Why is it that buying a home is so exciting but selling a home is often a sad and emotional experience? As a Realtor I have helped hundreds of people buy and sell homes over the years and I always love seeing the happiness and excitement people have when buying a home.

So often the ones that get to me the most are when people sell a home they have lived in for many years. For example, I recently sold a home that belonged to a 90 year old lady who went to live with her daughter. This lady is a strong person with a bubbly, outspoken personality and is active and involved in so many things. I know it was hard for her to sell her beautiful home giving up her independent living along with all of her gorgeous furniture and collectibles. We sure made the most out of the process and I had a lot of fun getting to know her.

Another one that was especially difficult recently was when I sold the home of a dear friend who had lost her husband. She called me several months ago to tell me that her husband was sick and they wanted to sell the home to simplify their lives. I met her at the house and was immediately flooded with the memories of when they bought the house. Her husband had bought the house as a special surprise for her on her 40th birthday. I remembered how much fun he and I had negotiating the purchase and anticipating the surprise. He was so excited and it was evident how much he loved her and wanted to make her happy. I was able to be there to set everything up for the day he brought her to the house for the first time as the new homeowner. That was one of the most fun sales I’ve ever been a part of!
Now here we were again in the same house only under different circumstances. Her amazing husband passed away not long after we listed the house and I watched her handle all the tough decisions by herself and do it with such kindness and grace. I so much admire her strength and I will be praying for her and their children this Christmas season because I know it’s going to be especially difficult.

I think the reason I love residential real estate is because of the people and the fact that it’s not just a house I’m selling , but it’s someone’s home. A home is what holds all the memories. It holds the memories of a newlywed couple moving into their first home. It is the memory of bringing your baby home from the hospital for the first time. It holds the memories of all the Christmases. It holds the memories of all the bad DIY projects haha. It holds the memories of watching your children playing in the yard. It holds the memory of first day of school pictures with fresh smiles, and new backpacks. It holds the memory of watching your child drive away to go to college and then of grandchildren coming to visit. A home is where life happens and that is why it’s special. 😊
