A Federal Jury just awarded $1.4M to a woman injured in a slip and fall at an Atlanta area Walmart.

In the incident, coffee was spilled on the floor. A sign was put out and a mat was placed over the spill. As the woman stepped on the mat it slid over the slippery coffee, causing her to fall and get injured.

A wet floor sign is an important piece of safety equipment but more important is removing the hazard. In this case the sign placement was viewed as knowledge of a hazard and because the hazard was not removed, Walmart was found negligent.

Have you been tested?

No, not that kind of test...No not that kind either. We are talking about slip testing.

I get asked often, "when should slip tests be done?"

So I put a quick guide together which lays out 5 times you should have BOT 3000E slip test done.

Notice I said BOT 3000E. This is crucial, as it is the only ANSI approved test method. Don't be fooled by other methods that only give a false sense of security.

When was the last time (if ever) your floors were tested? Are your floors safe? Can you prove it?

Most restaurants and businesses have their workers clean their floors at the end of the day when everyone is tired and ready to go home. The cleaning usually means that someone takes a dirty mop with some water, that they may or may not have changed out since the previous cleaning, and adds some sort of generic floor cleaner and mops the entire area as fast as they can to finish and go home.

The mentality then becomes, if my mop touches an area and it appears wet, then it’s most likely clean.

In reality, all they are doing is taking grease from heavy saturated areas and spreading it evenly across the entire area.

Don’t do this!

Why Should I Test My Floor?

In many public spaces, the owner of the facility/property bears the responsibility of providing a safe walkway to ensure the safety of employees, customers and basically anyone that will be walking on that surface.

If a floor is below the threshold of what is considered a safe floor, and someone suffers and injury due to a slip and fall, the property owner can be held responsible for the damages. The property manager won’t be able to argue in court that they didn’t know the floors were slippery.

The first step to providing safety is knowledge. You should know whether or not your walkways are compliant with all floor safety standards.
