Most freezer problems come from freezing food the same way every time without adjusting for the type of food or how you plan to use it later. These twelve tricks prevent freezer burn, save thawing time, and make frozen food taste as good as the day you cooked it. Pressing zip bags flat before freezing creates thin uniform slabs that stack like books and thaw in half the time of a frozen block. Wrapping individual portions in plastic wrap before placing them in a freezer bag removes the air contact that causes freezer burn on the surface within days. Flash-freezing berries, shrimp, and dumplings on a parchment-lined sheet pan for one hour before bagging prevents them from clumping into one solid mass you have to chisel apart. Freezing leftover broth and sauce in ice cube trays gives you perfectly portioned flavor additions you can drop straight into any pan without thawing a full container. Labeling every bag with the contents and the date eliminates the mystery packages that sit in the back for a year until you throw them away. Storing bread in the freezer and toasting individual slices from frozen produces better texture than leaving it on the counter where it goes stale in three days. Freezing overripe bananas whole in their peels gives you ready-made smoothie and baking ingredients that peel easily under warm water. Portioning ground meat into pre-measured flat patties before freezing means you defrost exactly what you need instead of thawing the whole package. Freezing fresh herbs in olive oil in ice cube trays preserves their flavor for months while dried herbs lose potency within weeks on the shelf. Placing a piece of parchment between stacked items like pancakes, burger patties, and chicken breasts lets you pull one out without thawing the entire stack. Squeezing every molecule of air out of a freezer bag before sealing is the single most effective freezer burn prevention method because oxygen is what causes surface dehydration. Keeping your freezer at least three-quarters full makes it run more efficiently because frozen mass holds temperature better than empty air space and costs less energy to maintain. Twelve freezer upgrades that end wasted food.
