I’ve stood in ancient cities, crossed oceans, admired other cultures, and fallen in love with places far from home. And everywhere I go, I’m reminded how many people around the world still look to America with admiration, affection, and hope.

I’m also the daughter of a man who came to this country legally from Cuba seeking something better, and that has shaped the way I see America.

Traveling the world hasn’t made me love this country less. If anything, it has made me love it more. America is freedom, opportunity, courage, reinvention, generosity, and hope. To me, she is still the beacon — the place people dream of, pray for, and risk everything to reach.

On her 250th birthday, I’m grateful beyond words to call her home.

Happy 250th, America. 🇺🇸

It’s one of the Smokies’ most magical natural events — synchronous firefly season has begun at Elkmont! ✨

If you’re heading into Great Smoky Mountains National Park this week, please be mindful of the temporary access limits and parking rules in place through May 27. These protections help preserve the fireflies and their habitat during their brief mating season.

A little patience and planning helps ensure future visitors can experience this incredible glow-in-the-dark wonder, too. 🌲💫

The synchronous firefly viewing event begins today at Elkmont and runs through May 27!

Please remember:
• After 12 PM, access to Elkmont is limited to vehicles with reservations and registered campers.
• No overnight parking is permitted at Little River Trailhead, Jakes Creek Trailhead, or the Appalachian Clubhouse during this period.



The Elkmont area in Great Smoky Mountains National Park is home to a large population of synchronous fireflies. These temporary closures help protect the fireflies and firefly habitat during their mating season. The park uses soil temperature to predict peak viewing dates, which can shift each year. Since 1993, recorded peak activity has ranged from the third week of May to the third week of June.

For my garden lovers, Anglophiles, and travelers who love a beautifully curated European itinerary — this one is worth a look. 🌸

Insight Vacations has a gorgeous itinerary called European Affair and Chelsea Flower Show, and it combines so many of my favorite travel ingredients: London, iconic gardens, charming European cities, historic architecture, river and canal moments, and a lovely finish in Paris.

The journey begins in London with one of the most celebrated garden events in the world: the Chelsea Flower Show. Think breathtaking floral displays, show gardens, design inspiration, and that very British sense of occasion that makes this event feel so special.

From there, the itinerary continues across the Channel and into Amsterdam, with time to experience the city’s famous canals, historic merchant houses, and Dutch charm. There is also a visit to Aalsmeer, home to the world’s largest flower auction — a fascinating behind-the-scenes look at the international flower trade.

Paris is beautiful, but not only beautiful.

Some of the most affecting moments came in places of remembrance — among graves, memorials, tributes, and names that continue to call for reflection. There is art here, yes, but also memory. Loss. Endurance. Reverence.

I always think travel matters most when it expands more than our list of places seen. The places that stay with me longest are often the ones that ask for a little stillness.

The most meaningful journeys usually leave room for reflection as well as beauty.
