Create Your Haven: Sometimes the House Isn’t the Problem

One couple I worked with had already done the big-house chapter beautifully. They had lived on the lake, had the space, the view, the memories — and all the responsibility that came with it. What they wanted next wasn’t “less.” They wanted a home where most of daily life happened on one level, guests still had their own space, and leaving town for a few days didn’t require a mental checklist.

Another client had the opposite problem. Her current home was simply too small for the reality of her family’s needs. The conversation wasn’t about simplifying. It was about finding a layout that would make everyday life easier, with more usable space and the right rooms in the right places.

What are you keeping the house for?
That’s not always an easy question.

For many of us, a home represents decades of memories, holidays, children, accomplishments and people we love.

So deciding whether it still fits isn’t simply a financial decision.

Here’s a gentler question:
If your home required half as much of your time, money and energy, what would you do with the difference?
Travel?
Spend more time downtown?
See the grandchildren?
Walk more?
Play more pickleball?
Do absolutely nothing on Saturday morning?

There is a particular kind of stress that comes with seeing a change your parents may not be ready to see themselves.

You want to respect their independence. You don't want to pressure them. But you also don't want the first real conversation about the future to happen during a crisis.

Here's something I wish more families knew:

Planning and moving are not the same thing. You can learn. You can prepare. You can understand the options. You can identify resources. You can have conversations. And none of that means your parents have agreed to move.

Sometimes the most valuable thing an adult child can do is become informed before the family needs to make a decision.
