I'm so excited to share a little glimpse of our oceanfront family resort project... partially hidden, looking over the crest of the hill down towards the water. Although the framing is only about halfway complete, it's starting to take some shape! Love it! Seriously, oversized windows and curtain walls were created for the views this home will have!!

Although this year is one not soon be forgotten--complete with clients I'm always so grateful for, talented and trusted colleagues I count on, and the likely possibility of one of this year's projects being used for an upcoming TV series--I'm nonetheless always excited as I look forward to what the New Year ahead of us will bring! Can't wait!

Wishing you all a happy and relaxing holiday season, surrounded by loved ones, and all of the very best in 2023!!

One of the questions I sometimes ask my clients in our first design meeting is "When it comes to stairs, if you can only choose one option, are they the way we get from floor to floor, or, are they an important architectural feature." It's sort of a silly question, I know. In most cases, you obviously have to have stairs, and while serving the function they can certainly also be stunningly beautiful. But I really just ask it, because I like the conversation it sometimes starts.

On a recent trip to Europe, I couldn't resist taking a few pictures of some stairs. Yes, of course stairs can be a beautiful feature in your home... In fact, I LOVE taking things that we use multiple times every day, and maybe don't even think much about, and turning them into something more meaningful. Some of these types of design decisions are what can change the overall feeling of actually living in the home! But I think what I love about these images I took in Europe is that the stairs aren't merely a "detail"... they're an integral part of the actual architecture of the buildings they belong to. I love it!

Of all the amazing things to take pictures of when you're visiting countries as gorgeous as Italy or Croatia, probably only nerds like me focus on old stone stairs. But regardless... enjoy!

It was such a kind compliment, when presenting this home to Hillsborough's Architectural Design Review Board, to have one of them comment that it was the "the most beautiful home they'd seen presented in all of their time on the Board"... although I did feel a little bad, since there were three other homes presented that evening!

Another member of that same Review Board happened to meet me at the property many months later. She told me that she'd actually changed her daily walking route, just so that she could walk past this beautiful home every day. Although this home won't be professionally photographed, I thought I'd share a couple pic's from the street view, so you all can at least virtually walk past it as well. : )

I'm always so honored to have opportunities to humbly add to the architectural tapestry in so many great communities! And I'm excited to be back in the Bay Area to do it!

One of the little places that makes me smile in the Bay Area is absolutely Mademoiselle Colette. Even though there are soon to be four locations, once they open in Atherton, and one of those is in Palo Alto, not far from the Hamilton Ave office, I always like to sneak back to the original shop in Menlo Park. I love it. I discovered it one morning while on a run back in 2017... I think on my very first trip to the Peninsula. Back then I'd usually find Debora Ferrand, the shop's owner, sitting at one of the intimate little tables inside. Since then I've met with several contractors and owners reps there for a coffee or hot chocolate, along with a fantastic French pastry. If you've never been, I highly recommend it!

For the past several months we've been working on a new website, and we are so SO excited for it to FINALLY be live and ready to share with all of you! This is just a "soft launch" as we work out some of the final bugs and edits, but please take a look and then share, repost, and/or like this post... and especially comment and tell us what you think! Let us know if you find any more typos or missed words in there. LOL.

A special thanks to all of you who have contributed to the site, including so many clients and colleagues who were so willing to share such kind feedback, testimonials, and quotes with us. They keep coming in and so we haven't been able to use them all (yet), but they mean so much to us! We genuinely try to give our clients and their builders the absolute best possible experience in every aspect of what we do; it's so satisfying to hear back how it was received! Thank you.

I admittedly get excited about a lot of stages of construction. I'm nerdy about this stuff, I know. When the windows get installed, for example, the house just starts to come alive somehow! But one of my very favorite pieces of the construction jigsaw puzzle, is surely the masonry. There's almost a romance to it, as these craftsman, with their chisels and hammers, fine-tune by hand every single piece of stone that gets installed. Love it!

Over the years, and in several cities, we've had truly incredible masons on our projects. My hats off to them! Twice, I've been honored to design a personal home for the owners of different masonry companies, and they were such fun projects! On another project we did, in Hillsborough California, I got to tour a limestone quarry in Indiana, where we choose our slabs and got see exactly how it gets done; all the way from massive blocks of stone in the ground all the way to becoming our finished details. One of the coolest tours I've every taken!

Although I designed this home many years ago, I wanted to share a quick picture. This project will always be significant to Marre. It was a test… a test of an idea I’d been flirting with about how to make our custom home design process more impactful, relatable, and enjoyable for our clients.

In those days, I always tried to have a second client meeting within two weeks of the first. But in this case, varying schedules meant that after our initial meeting we couldn’t meet with the clients again for about a month. So, I decided to go for it! That is, I decided to test my idea for a new design approach!

This was the plan: rather than only being prepared to present the expected preliminary schematic sketches in the second meeting, I would endeavor to fully develop a detailed design that I felt would work perfectly for them. It would be based on many pages of notes taken during our discovery meeting, and it took dozens of iterations crumped up and strewn around the office. The layouts would be complete with even ideas for interior details, and we’d produce a comprehensive 3d model right away… All in one month. To pull that off meant lots of late nights, many turned into early mornings. I still remember the chaos in the office that morning, as drawings were flying off the printer literally moments before the clients walked through the door.

I was admittedly a little nervous that all that work would be for naught… but the clients were absolutely blown away! They understood clearly what was being proposed, and easily saw the relationship between floor plan and the exterior… how one impacted the other. Anxiety quickly alleviated for them when they realized the ideas for their dream home had been heard; more importantly, they felt validated that our careful listening had brought meaningful understanding of their family’s needs.

The black and white rendering I’m sharing was from that first meeting. As you can see from the photos taken today, they approved that first design we “revealed” to them, without changing a thing!

And so it was, Marre Design’s unique design process changed forever!

Seriously, the only thing better than doing a bit of field review at a beach house project on a beautiful sunny day is having my daughter home from university and coming with me to help out! So fun to share one of my projects with her!

I know that I'm probably supposed to just be posting pretty pictures of the finished details, but after being on-site on one of our waterfront projects, I couldn't resist but to share a bit of my excitement as the house is starting to come to life. I love seeing the structural timber framing tied in all throughout this cottage home!

They've still got to build a large timber-framed deck off of the screen porch, in front of the large floor-to-ceiling windows, as well as a timber gazebo above their future hot tub... but even without that in place, I can already see it finished in my mind. I can see the tongue and groove ceiling finished between all those beautiful exposed timbers, with a folding door system stacked open to the side of the 12-foot wide opening between the living area and screened porch. I can imagine matching folding windows trimmed at the bottom by the kitchen countertop, wide open to bar stools on the porch, and completely blurring the lines between the interior and exterior. But most importantly, I can already see my clients' family gatherings here, with little ones running in and out carefree between the two spaces!

I can't wait to retake this picture when it will show what I can already see so clearly in my mind...

This little corridor is going to be spectacular, with a full glass wall on one side, made up of three oversized double-hung windows, and views to a golf course several hundred feet below the site. There are a couple of precisely placed and symmetrically spaced door openings on what will be a little gallery wall opposite the glass, with a narrow table set between the openings. One of many beautiful white oak custom doors will bookend this very view through an equally sized cased opening from off the entry. The not-yet-dropped ceiling will have wood shiplap slats, matching those of a small soon-to-be-built timber framed patio outside the three windows.

Can you see it??

One of my favorite things is to be out on a beautiful site on a beautiful day, taking a look at how one of our current Jig Saw Puzzles is coming together!

After 20 years, I still find it exciting to see come to life what used to just be in my head! Before going to university, I actually framed large custom homes for a number of years. I can honestly say that I have never designed a house that I couldn't have framed... but as in this case, I HAVE designed many that I wouldn't have wanted to! : )
