🌴 Why Waikīkī gets such mixed reactions 🌴
Waikīkī is one of those places people experience very differently.
For many locals, it can feel busy, tourist-heavy, and separate from everyday island life. But for people relocating from the mainland, that same energy can feel familiar, convenient, and easier to settle into.
I understand both sides because I relocated here too.
Waikīkī really is its own bubble. It has a different pace and feel from the rest of Oʻahu, but that is also part of the appeal.
You can walk to the beach, coffee shops, restaurants, fitness studios, shopping, and entertainment without depending on a car for every errand. For someone coming from a walkable city or a busy mainland neighborhood, that familiarity can make the transition to island living feel a little easier.
It is not the version of Oʻahu everyone is looking for, but for the right person, it can be a great place to begin.
From a real estate perspective, Waikīkī also offers a wide range of options, from smaller studios and older condo buildings to luxury residences and multi-million-dollar penthouses.
The key is knowing what you are buying. Some properties may be leasehold, some may allow short-term rentals, some may not, and monthly maintenance fees can significantly affect your true housing cost.
Waikīkī is not for everyone, but for many people relocating to Oʻahu, it offers a level of convenience and familiarity that is hard to find elsewhere on the island.
If you’re still exploring the idea of moving to Oʻahu, I put together a relocation guide to help you get started. Comment “START” and I’ll send it to you.
Your Hawaiʻi Dream Home, Elevated.
