Wonder why water ponds around your house when it rains? Many times we care a lot about how our house looks inside, but somehow we neglect the exterior either because we don't have time or inclement weather conditions keep us from looking around the house. There are several reasons why water may accumulate in your yard after heavy rains. A great rule of thumb is to give your yard a slope of about one inch in twelve away from the foundation; a lot of times it is almost impossible, but do your best. Avoid storing items against exterior walls as they will keep water from draining, and it will bring excessive moisture to the walls and foundation. If your house doesn't have gutters it would be a great idea to invest on them. If you do have gutters, check them periodically to keep them clean of debris and well secured. Make sure you have splashblocks in place to direct water away from the foundation.
