More than one-quarter of US homes are exposed to severe climate risk - HAR.com Insights@

Housing affordability is one of the top concerns for millions of people nationwide. The Kinder Institute reports there is a $176,000 gap between incomes and home prices in the Houston area. But innovative ideas are emerging. Zuri Gardens, a 3D-printed community near Hobby Airport, is bringing 80 energy-efficient homes to market in the mid- to high-$200s. With city down payment assistance of up to $125,000, these flood- and heat-resilient homes could set the tone for how we tackle both affordability and climate challenges moving forward.

We’re also seeing older spaces reimagined for today’s needs. The Watt, a $93 million office-to-residential conversion in the Energy Corridor, is turning a former BP and ConocoPhillips tower into apartments. With far more jobs than housing in the district, this project is a reminder that vacant offices can also be part of Houston’s housing solution.

Realtor.com’s latest climate report found that more than a quarter of U.S. homes face severe weather threats, representing $12.7 trillion in property value. Flooding remains one of the most underestimated risks, and Houston now ranks in the top 10 for highest insurance burdens.

Innovation is reshaping how we live and move. Uber plans to add 20,000 Lucid electric robotaxis to its fleet, powered by Nuro’s autonomous driving system. With cities like Austin already testing self-driving rides, Houston may not be far behind. Transportation and housing are both evolving and both will define the future of our communities.
