This morning I watched a video that really hit me.
It was about Shohei Ohtani and why he’s so successful — and honestly, it gave me one of those “aha” moments.
I’m not trying to sound all technical here, but the video talked about something in psychology called the ABC method.
It goes like this: Activating Event → Belief → Consequence.
Basically, when something happens, it’s not the event that makes us feel a certain way — it’s what we believe about it.
Once I heard that, it just made so much sense.
In the video, Ohtani gets hit by a pitch.
Most players would be angry or ready to fight, but he just stayed calm and told his team to stand down.
The event was getting hit.
His belief was to stay focused.
The consequence was control and respect.
That right there is what separates him.
But it could’ve gone the other way.
If his belief was “that’s not fair” or “I’m not letting that go,” the consequence might’ve been anger, tension, maybe even a fight.
That’s what got me thinking — how much power there is between what happens and how we respond.
It’s not always easy, but if we can slow down and check that belief in the middle, we can change everything that follows.
It’s crazy — try this out for yourself.
Pick any situation and walk it through: Activating Event → Belief → Consequence.
The more I did this, the more I realized — it really is the belief that shapes everything.
