Winter at Lazy Moose Lodge. Real snow, real quiet, and Yellowstone in winter is a snowcoach ride away from West Yellowstone.

If you're heading into the park before the roads close Saturday, take Firehole Canyon Drive. It's a short one-way side road just south of Madison Junction, with lava rock walls on both sides and Firehole Falls partway through. Easy detour, big payoff.

Once the park roads close to cars next week, Mammoth is still open. You can drive in through Gardiner all winter, and the elk pretty much own the lawns up there. This big guy was grazing right next to the road.

October in Island Park. A deer in the aspens, moose wading the Henrys Fork at Mack's Inn, Big Springs running crystal clear, and a day trip into Yellowstone for Lower Falls.

Fall is quiet here and it's one of our favorite times at the cabin. Book direct with us, link in bio.

We went into Yellowstone last January and the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone was something else. Once the roads close to cars, the park opens back up in mid-December for snowcoach and snowmobile tours. Way fewer people, and the whole place looks like this.

Big news from the cabin. We just started the Lazy Moose Lodge Journal.

Guests ask us the same great questions every year. Where the Henrys Fork starts, how to do Yellowstone in winter, what's actually worth the drive. So we're putting it all in one place.

This is just the beginning. Right now there are two guides up, Big Springs and Yellowstone in winter, and we'll be adding a new one about every month.

Easy one to miss: Big Springs, just up the road from Mack's Inn. Well over 100 million gallons of crystal clear water come out of the ground here every day, and you can watch big rainbow trout right from the bridge. No fishing allowed and it's free. That's the old Johnny Sack Cabin on the bank.

Cold fall mornings are the best time to see the thermal areas. The colder the air, the more steam you get. This was Artists' Paintpots near Norris on an October morning a few years back. Park roads are open to cars through the end of the month if you want to catch it.

Stopped at Mack's Inn last week to grab pizza at The Parlor and two moose were just strolling down the Henrys Fork like they owned the place. Fall evenings in Island Park never get old.

Heads up if you're thinking about one more Yellowstone trip this year. Most park roads close to cars October 31. The road from Gardiner through Lamar Valley stays open all winter though, and that's where our guests see the most wildlife once the snow hits. 📷 NPS / Jacob W. Frank
