Wild Blueberry Land: A 10,000-Year Journey 🫐
Thriving in Downeast Maine's soil since glaciers receded over 10,000 years ago, wild blueberries are an ancient crop, deeply interconnected with nature, and a staple of Maine's history. (Just ask co-founder Dell Emerson about how canned wild blueberries were the Union Army’s "secret weapon" during the Civil War!)
👨🌾 The Visionaries: Meet Dell & Marie 👩🌾
Before the giant dome existed, founders Marie and Dell Emerson were already deeply rooted in the industry. Dell (the ultimate "farmer’s farmer") spent 53 years running the University of Maine’s wild blueberry research farm. Marie, a certified, award-winning chef, dedicated her life to culinary arts and advocacy, literally wearing blue every single day to spread the word about saving multigenerational family farms.
Together, they ran Wescogus Wild Blueberry, a tucked-away farm overlooking the tidal Pleasant River with Acadia’s Cadillac Mountain as a backdrop. To sell fresh berries, jams, and pies from Wescogus, Dell and Marie decided they needed a highly visible farmstand.
In 2001, they built a massive, blue geodesic dome rising right outta the soil on Route 1 in Columbia Falls. But what started as a farmstand quickly evolved. Driven by Dell and Marie's passion, Wild Blueberry Land became an evangelistic mission to champion Maine’s state berry as a "national treasure." Over the years, it grew from a simple bakery into a vibrant museum, a blueberry-themed mini-golf course, and a beloved community fixture.
🚗 In a few weeks when you’re headed to Seaberry Landing’s August 1st Oceanfront Land Sale event, keep an eye out for a giant blueberry and pull over for a slice of history, a taste of "one of the last real things left," and a classic photo-op 📸 (even when it’s closed during the winter, people love taking pictures of the domed building covered in snow!).
