This letter landed in Washington D.C. this week. And every member of Congress needs to answer for ignoring it.
More than 500 organizations — representing millions of Americans across 47 states — sent a letter to Congress this week demanding a national moratorium on the approval and construction of ALL new data centers across the United States.
500 organizations. 47 states. One unified demand.
The letter — published June 11, 2026 — warns Congress in plain language: “The rapid, largely unregulated rise of data centers presents one of the biggest environmental and social threats of our generation.”
Not a future threat. Not a hypothetical risk. One of the biggest threats of our generation. Right now. Today.
The coalition — called the Stop Data Centers Coalition, launched by Food & Water Watch on June 11 — includes community groups, environmental organizations, faith communities, labor advocates, and small business owners. Republicans. Democrats. Independents. All signing the same letter. All demanding the same thing.
The letter specifically warned Congress that the unchecked expansion of data centers already threatens Americans’ economic security, their environmental health, their water supply, and their climate. The groups wrote that allowing this expansion to continue without federal regulation is a choice — a deliberate decision to protect trillion-dollar corporations over millions of American families.
Meanwhile — Congress is mostly leaving it to localities to figure it out.
500 organizations wrote. Congress has not responded.
In Festus, Missouri — on the same day this letter was sent — protesters demonstrated outside City Hall as the council voted not to honor a citizen-led recall of a mayor and three members who voted to approve a data center. Protesters stood outside. Politicians voted inside. Democracy challenged at every level.
Across 47 states — people are organized, they are united, and they are demanding that their federal representatives act.
