There’s no wrong answer—just two different kinds of peaceful. Which one are you picking?

Me: I’m a beach girl through and through, but I love escaping to the mountains for a week every fall to reconnect with the trees, hiking trails, and changing leaves. 🍁

Still, it’s hard to beat fall at home on the Outer Banks—warm ocean water, cooler beach walks, fewer crowds, and some seriously gorgeous sunsets. 🌅

So if I HAVE to choose… 🌊 wins for me.

23 years ago, Hurricane Isabel changed Hatteras Island.

On September 18, 2003, Isabel carved a new inlet between Frisco and Hatteras Village, washing out Highway 12 and cutting Hatteras Village off from the rest of the island.

I was 21 years old at the time, and it's one of those moments in Hatteras Island history you don't forget.

But what came afterward says so much about this island.

A year later, Day at the Docks was created to celebrate the “Spirit of Hatteras” — the strength of this community, our working waterfront, and the generations of watermen who are such an important part of Hatteras Island's history and culture.

And 23 years later, we're still gathering. ❤️

Day at the Docks returns to Hatteras Village this Saturday, September 19, with local seafood, boats, demonstrations, music, kids' activities, competitions and one of my favorite traditions — the Blessing of the Fleet. ⚓️

If you've never experienced Day at the Docks, come down to Hatteras Village. It's more than a festival. It's a celebration of where we've been, who we are, and the community that keeps Hatteras Island so special. 🌊

This one feels a little extra special. 💙

As a graduate of Cape Hatteras Secondary School, and now, as a mother of two girls who absolutely love to read, I’m incredibly proud to be part of an organization that gives back to the students and community that helped shape me.

This morning, I had the honor of accepting a generous donation on behalf of the Buxton Civic Association for the Gee Gee Rosell Scholarship Fund, which supports graduating seniors right here at Cape Hatteras Secondary School. 🎓

Gee Gee was an amazing woman, and I was proud to call her a friend. She gave so much of herself to our schools, our community, and our island, and I’m incredibly grateful for all she did for Hatteras Island. It’s wonderful to see her legacy continue through a scholarship that supports the young people she cared so much about. ❤️

Our island may be small, but the support behind our students is anything but. Our schools, teachers, families, local organizations, and neighbors are such an important part of what makes Hatteras Island an incredible place to grow up — and an incredible place to call home.

It’s pretty special to have once been a student walking those halls and now be part of an organization helping support the next generation of Hatteras Island graduates. Who knows, maybe one day one of my own girls will be the beneficiary of this scholarship, helping send her on to bigger and brighter things.

Thank you to everyone who continues to support the Gee Gee Rosell Scholarship and invest in the future of our local students. 💙🌊

It was a gorgeous morning to come together on Hatteras Island! ☀️🌊

Thank you to the Barrier Island Group for hosting this year’s Topless Labor Day Lighthouse 5K — and yes, the lighthouse was topless, not the participants. 😉😂

The Buxton Civic Association was proud to volunteer and be part of another wonderful community event. ❤️

One of the things I love most about Hatteras Island is the incredible sense of community and all the people who work together to make this such a special place to call home.
