- Look into neighborhoods near your new base that fit your family's needs. Consider factors like schools, amenities, and commute times.
- Research local schools and find the best fit for your children. Reach out to school liaison officers for assistance with enrollment and transferring records.
- Understand the cost of living in the new city and adjust your budget accordingly.
3. Connect with the Community
- Look for community groups on social media or local forums where you can ask questions and get advice from other military families.
- Participate in events and activities on base to meet new people and integrate into the community.
- Don't hesitate to reach out to family support centers or military family life counselors for support during the transition.
4. Prepare for the Move
- Sort through your belongings and decide what to keep, donate, or sell. This will make packing easier and reduce moving costs.
- Label boxes clearly with their contents and the room they belong in. Keep essential items like important documents, medications, and a change of clothes in a separate bag for easy access.
- If you have pets, make sure you arrange for their transportation and have their medical records handy.
5. Utilize Military Benefits
- Take advantage of Temporary Lodging Allowance (TLA) to cover lodging and meal expenses while you search for permanent housing.
