Right now in much of Southern Appalachia, many of our communities are hurting worse than they ever have before. But for many of us, life goes on. We should not let this massive, destructive event pass by without affecting our hearts, even if it didn’t affect our homes. For those of us whose homes and families were untouched by Hurricane Helene, there has never been a better time to practice gratitude.
1 Samuel 12:24 - But be sure to fear the Lord and serve him faithfully with all your heart; consider what great things he has done for you.
The Bible tells us to be grateful for all of the great things the Lord has done for us. I think it’s easy to forget what “great things” means. We think that a great thing might be something like winning the lottery or attaining great wealth or fame. Let’s redefine our scope.
So many people in this world are starving, injured, or hurting worse than many of us will ever experience. To be able to wake up in the morning in a warm bed, in a heated building, with a kitchen stocked with food, with running water, with electricity, is a GREAT thing. To be able to walk, to be able to run, to be able to move our bodies without pain, is a GREAT thing. To have the freedom to speak freely, wear what we want, spend time with who we want, is a GREAT thing. For me, to be blessed with healthy children and to be allowed to watch those children grow unharmed into adults… now THAT is a GREAT thing.
Thank you, God, for ALL the great things you do for us.
