Last night I was putting my boys to bed. Oftentimes at bed time I will carry on a tradition of my own father and tell them a story from my youth. Since it was my birthday the boys requested a story from a birthday long past. I thought for a second and decided to tell them about a birthday when I was about 6 years old. I remember that all I wanted to do for my birthday was to go to monster trucks with my dad and Ken Dudley.

The monster trucks that year were held at the Salt Palace in Salt Lake. In addition to monster trucks, that year they had motocross and mud bog racing. I cheered loudly for my favorite monster truck at that time, Big Foot and was thrilled that he beat that evil Grave Digger truck. I got a Big Foot flash light and hat too. That’s as good as hitting the jackpot for a young boy. The funniest part of this story comes from the halftime show.

They had a woman who called herself The Dynamite Lady. The lights got dark and several spotlights came on illuminating the silhouette of a young woman. She had on a striped headband tying back a long perm and was dressed in a spandex suit with an american flag theme. Her sparkly cape shimmered as she walked around the arena for several minutes blowing kisses and waving to the people. After pumping up the crown she walked over to what looked like a cardboard box with the words Dynamite Lady on the side. She put on an openfaced motorcycle helmet and crawled into the box. A count down was initiated and before the crowd even got to one in a spectacular fashion the box blew to bits! All that was left was a cloud of dust and smoke. As the dust settled The Dynamite Lady slowly started to move and the medical team rushed over to check on her. Helping her up she smiled and waved to the people once more and limped her way out of the arena. At 6 that was the dumbest part of the event. At 41 it’s the best part of the story.
