Germany just broke its all-time heat record three days in a row.

During a severe heat wave, the German Weather Service reported a provisional temperature of 107.1°F (41.7°C) in Coschen, Brandenburg, on June 28.

That followed two earlier provisional records: 106.3°F (41.3°C) in Saarbrücken on June 27, and 106.7°F (41.5°C) in Möckern-Drewitz on June 28.

The heat was not just a number on a thermometer.

In Leipzig, tram services were halted through the weekend after extreme temperatures damaged tracks and caused asphalt and bitumen to melt into the tramlines and points. The local transport authority said it was not safe for trains to operate.

Germany also recorded its highest overnight low on record, according to the weather service, when Kubschütz in Saxony only cooled to 84.9°F (29.4°C) overnight.

That matters because nights are when the body is supposed to recover from daytime heat. When temperatures stay unusually high after sunset, heat stress can build, especially for older adults, children, outdoor workers, and people without access to cooling.

The heat wave also contributed to forest fires across the country, including fires near areas where unexploded munitions remain in the ground. In some places, evacuations were ordered as a precaution.

At least seven people also died in swimming accidents over the weekend as many residents tried to cool off in lakes and rivers.

Extreme heat warnings covered much of Germany, with the worst conditions gradually shifting east before storm fronts were expected to bring some relief.

Heat waves are becoming more dangerous not only because daytime highs are rising, but because infrastructure, transport systems, forests, and human bodies are being pushed beyond the conditions they were built for.
