Keeping our power in service, no matter the time of day or night, no matter how harsh the weather...
In the small town of Willcox, Arizona, something very unusual happened in June this year — a bear got stuck on top of a tall power pole!
The young brown bear had climbed about 40 feet up and was dangerously close to live electrical wires carrying 7,200 volts. If the bear touched them, it could have been seriously hurt or killed. People nearby were shocked and quickly called the local power company, Sulphur Springs Valley Electric Cooperative (SSVEC), for help.
Two workers, Werner Neubauer and his apprentice Efren Gallego, rushed to the scene. Their first move was to shut off the power to keep the bear safe. Then Werner carefully approached the bear in a bucket truck, carrying a long fiberglass stick used for safety.
At one point, the bear even covered its eyes — almost like it was scared or shy. But Werner stayed calm and gently guided the bear to start climbing back down.
To everyone’s relief, the bear eventually made it down safely and ran off into the desert.
This heartwarming rescue showed how brave and quick-thinking utility workers can be — not just fixing power lines, but also saving lives, even when it's a bear!
