SWAPA’s Brand Manager, Brad Johnston, and his daughters kicked off the break with a successful hog hunt and some time well spent outdoors together. These are the kind of memories that last a lifetime. Early mornings, muddy boots, and time with family in the woods. Congratulations to the Johnston crew on a great hunt and an even better way to start the summer.

Creating quality deer and turkey habitats isn’t always about making things look “clean.” Sometimes it’s about creating diversity and structure that gives poults the best chance to survive.

In this video, Chipper Gibbes of SWAPA explains how a targeted chemical application helped open up thick vegetation, creating pockets where young poults can move, hide, and feed while still giving hens the visibility they need to watch for predators.

Sometimes the best wildlife habitat starts with what looks like a “dirty field.”

In this reel, SWAPA’s Chipper Gibbes walks through how an area transformed after a clear cut, mulching, disking, prescribed fire, and targeted herbicide applications. What may look rough at first glance is now exploding with native regrowth, ragweed, insects, and the kind of ground-level structure turkey poults and deer thrive in.

From open mineral soil, for easy movement, to shaded pockets, for cover and cooling off, every part of this field is serving a purpose. Deer are already taking advantage of the fresh browse, and the native forbs will continue providing food and cover throughout the summer.

Habitat management isn’t always pretty at first… but the response from wildlife tells the real story.

Please help us welcome Justin Hughes, our newest Mississippi Land Agent, to the SWAPA Team.

Justin is a native of Itawamba County with a deep passion for hunting, fishing, and land management. He grew up hunting and fishing in the Old Tombigbee River bottom along the Tennessee–Tombigbee Waterway, where he developed a lifelong appreciation for the land and wildlife conservation.

Justin attended Mississippi State University and graduated in 2007 with a degree in Forestry and Wildlife Management. Throughout his career as a Wildlife Biologist and Registered Forester, he has continued expanding his expertise through additional certifications, including becoming a Mississippi Prescribed Burn Manager and earning the National Deer Association Level 1 and Level 2 Deer Steward certifications. These qualifications have strengthened his knowledge and experience in property and wildlife management.

Justin and his wife, Leanna, live in Fulton with their three children, Jevan, Kendall, and Tatum.
