Something to think about.

📊 For someone born in 1963 with a full retirement age of 67 and a $2,200 benefit, filing at 62 pays $1,540 a month, while waiting until 70 pays $2,728.

By age 75, the person who filed at 62 has collected $240,240 versus $163,680 for filing at 70, a $76,560 head start.

The 62-versus-70 break-even falls just past age 80, after which waiting pulls ahead, reaching a $137,280 gap by age 90.

Here is the part the "I won't live that long" comments miss: that fear uses life expectancy at birth, about 78, but the number that matters is conditional, and a person who has already reached 62 lives on average to about 82 if male and 85 if female, which is past the break-even.

A common myth is that you cannot work and claim early, but you can, with earnings above $24,480 in 2026 reducing benefits by $1 for every $2, credited back as a higher benefit at full retirement age.

For married couples, the higher earner's claiming age sets the survivor benefit for life, so it is usually a joint decision.

None of this makes the answer universal, since poor health, a shorter family history, or a real need for cash can each make 62 the right call.

Clearwater: The South Beach Condo building at 1460 Gulf Blvd has been fully evacuated. Crews are waiting for delivery of shoring materials due to cracks in a concrete pillar on the Parking floor beneath the building. All of Gulf Blvd is closed. Use the Belleair Causeway or Sand Key Bridge for detour.
