There is something we need to start being honest about in our families and our communities—especially when it comes to land, inheritance, and generational wealth.
Too often, when property transitions after the passing of a loved one, unity breaks down. People who were never part of the building process suddenly appear when ownership is on the table. Instead of honoring legacy, conflict and division take its place.
I am currently an heir to property in Seaside, MD, and I have personally experienced the emotional toll of family tension and pressure surrounding something that was never truly divided or clarified until after my father’s passing. The experience has been eye-opening and painful at the same time.
This is bigger than me. It is about how easily we lose wealth, land, and legacy when there is no structure, no transparency, and no commitment to protecting what was built.
We have to do better:
- Put ownership and estate plans in writing
- Have hard conversations while people are still living
- Respect the process of inheritance, even when emotions are high
- Stop allowing confusion and pressure to erase legacy
Land is not just property. It is history, security, and opportunity for future generations.
If we don’t protect it, we will keep losing it—no matter how much we’ve built.
