Temps are heating up and with that brings pesky scam phone calls from 'roofers' in 'the area' checking roofs 'on your street'. I've received 10 calls of this nature in the last two weeks.

My 20 years in Property and Casualty Insurance, along with my time spent working Catastrophes like hurricanes and hail storms nationwide, has provided a lot of insight into the industry. Some reminders this season:

1. A lot of these 'roofers' are not local. Oftentimes, they have very little experience identifying hail or wind damage, and work for large congolmerates and are paid by commission. Which means, they may back consumers into a contract promising they will cover your deductible (which is illegal), tell you they will make your insurance carrier pay, and leave you stuck with the bill if your claim is denied.
2. Do not sign any contracts or agreements that may leave you stuck paying for a roof that you cannot afford. Be careful with Public Adjutors as well - they get paid based on a % of the total claim value so they will pad the claim amounts to increase their profit.
2. If you don't see hail damage on your soft metals such as aluminum gutters, chances are, your roof does not have hail damage (unless it's extremely brittle and old).
3. The intention of insurance is to pay for covered damage and is not a maintenance policy. Filing a claim, even if the claim is not paid, still counts as a claim on your record/loss history and could impact insurability and/or rates. With premiums skyrocketing - and underwriters being more and more selective on who they will insure - this is extremely important to understand.

If you are concerned about wind or hail damage to your roof, block those spam calls, and contact someone LOCAL. Call your local agent and ask for advice.
