Lucy the Elephant has stood along the Jersey Shore since 1881 — eight years before the Eiffel Tower opened in Paris. She is also older than both the Statue of Liberty and the Brooklyn Bridge.
Philadelphia real-estate developer James V. Lafferty built the enormous elephant in what was then South Atlantic City, now Margate.

Lucy wasn’t originally created simply as a tourist attraction. Lafferty designed her to attract prospective buyers to the undeveloped land he was promoting.

Originally called the Elephant Bazaar, Lucy stands six stories tall and weighs approximately 90 tons.

Her wooden frame is covered with tin sheeting, and visitors could climb through her interior to the howdah on her back, where they could take in views of the surrounding area, including the ocean.
Over the years, the elephant served as a real-estate office, tavern, business space and summer residence.

According to Lucy’s official history, Sophia Gertzen renamed the Elephant Bazaar “Lucy the Elephant” in 1902 and turned it into a tavern. Historical sources differ slightly on when the name “Lucy” first came into use, so 1902 is best presented as the official timeline date.

Lafferty’s elephant-building concept inspired other structures, including the Elephantine Colossus at Coney Island and the Light of Asia near Cape May. Neither survived.

By the 1960s, years of exposure to the elements and neglected maintenance had left Lucy badly deteriorated. She faced demolition until local residents organized to save her.

In 1970, the entire 90-ton structure was moved approximately 100 yards to a new location, where restoration began.

Lucy reopened to the public in 1974 and was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1976. Major restoration work continued over the years, with restoration completed in 2000.

More than 140 years after she was built to help sell seaside property, Lucy remains one of New Jersey’s most recognizable landmarks and is recognized as America’s oldest surviving roadside tourist attraction.

JUST CLOSED | Mays Landing 🏡 As always a story behind it.
My seller originally came to me quite some time ago, right as major changes were beginning to affect communities here in South Jersey. We made the decision to withdraw, wait, and come back when the timing was right.

And I won’t sugarcoat it—this transaction was complex. There were hurdles, delays, approvals, and more than one avenue explored to get us to the closing table.

Most importantly, thank you to my seller for hanging in there, trusting the process, and giving everyone the time needed to get this done. It wasn’t easy.

And a huge thank you to the buyer’s agent and lender. Everyone worked every angle and stayed committed to finding a path forward.

Closing week is when the little details can suddenly feel like BIG details. 🔑

Getting under contract is a huge milestone, but the final days before closing come with a few things buyers don’t always know to expect.

From another credit check to setting up utilities, scheduling movers, verifying wire instructions, and making sure you’re prepared for closing day, there’s a lot happening behind the scenes.

And wire fraud is one you really don’t want to overlook. Never trust updated wiring instructions sent by email. Always verify them directly with your title or closing company using a trusted phone number before sending any money.

The good news? Most closing-week surprises are much easier to handle when you know they’re coming.

There’s nothing better than helping a veteran relocating to South Jersey find the right place to call home!

I’m so happy we were able to find a home that:

And this one was a For Sale By Owner (FSBO) — proof that the right home doesn’t always come through the traditional route. Sometimes you have to look beyond the MLS and explore every opportunity available for your clients.
