Life's Lessons #1:

When you are feeling anxious or stressed, like you'll never be able to get everything done, and your gut is tied up in a knot that keeps getting tighter - YOU CAN CHANGE THAT!

I was out for a walk the other day and I remembered a time when I decided to do one small thing differently. JUST ONE SMALL THING.

I immediately felt calmer and the knot in my belly disappeared. Then I noticed everything in my life slowed down. Soon it became clear WHY this memory came to me.

MY PURPOSE IN LIFE is: "To Learn, Grow, Teach, and Make a Difference in the World. And the only way I can do that is to pass these nuggets of wisdom on to you. So here you go!

The 10 Metros with the fastest growing sales prices in Massachusetts are:

• Chatham – 205%
• Avon – 67%
• Lawrence – 61%
• Mashpee – 43%
• S. Yarmouth – 43%
• Barnstable Town – 41%
• Barnstable – 40%
• Brewster – 39%
• Yarmouth – 37%
• Harwich – 34%

You’ll notice that 8 of the 10 towns with the fastest rate of increase in the process of housing are on Cape Cod. What does that tell us? In my college Economics classes, I learned that the two most common driving factors for increasing prices are: Demand-Pull and Supply-Push price increases.

Demand-Pull occurs when the Demand for a product or service is either increasing faster than the available supply, or the stock of readily available inventory is decreasing, which causes a spike in pricing. Conversely, Supply Push price increases occur when the supply of a particular product is decreasing, while Demand is either relatively stable, or on the rise.

You’ll find a very quick and personal interpretation of what these numbers mean below. Please remember that this is my own opinion, derived from a short peek at a very limited amount of data.

• An aging population and people are seeking more rural areas in which to live year-round.
• It could be that housing starts on the Cape are lagging behind other areas of the state which would lead to an area-wide increase in prices.
• This could be a response to the Covid Crisis. People who had not previously been able to, or did not feel comfortable enough, have taken to working remotely.
• More and more people have become accustomed to the newly widespread practice of working from home. This gives them more flexibility as to exactly where that home/work place can be located.
• The supply of housing on the Cape wasn’t ready for this phenomenon and, therefore, has fell behind a growing demand.

Recessed Lighting Done Differently!

Every once in a while, I find a new touch, a new way of thinking about something that everybody automatically does in a more traditional way. Last Friday, while showing a home in Salem, NH, I found the recessed lighting idea that is in the video below.

Instead of cutting holes in the ceiling, which can make a tremendous mess that you're cleaning up for weeks, the lights were placed in a shelf that is built in around the room.

LOCATION, LOCATION, LOCATION

The family was growing but the house was not. Something had to be done – a decision needed to be made. Leaving a unique neighborhood where people really cared for each other, babysat each other’s kids, and watched each other’s houses when vacation time came around, was an option too painful to contemplate.

So, it was out with the old and in with the new. Where once there stood a small, 1300 sq. ft. Saltbox Colonial, now exists this custom designed, quietly elegant, 3600 sq. ft. home. It is also a “Perfect Storm” of location, quiet elegance, spacious living, and ease of living.

This is one of those instances when THE GREATER GOOD prevailed. The right family came along and recognized the value this house represented to them. My client (the Owner of the House) won, the buyer won, the neighborhood won, and I won. It doesn’t get much better than that.

"THE LAST OF THE HUMAN FREEDOMS IS OUR ABILITY TO CHOOSE OUR OWN ATTITUDES."

Viktor Frankl was an eminent Austrian psychologist when the N**i hordes invaded his beloved homeland. He was shipped off to the concentration camps for the "crime" of being Jewish.

This amazing man spent eight years in seven different camps, suffering more unspeakable horrors in one day than most of us could endure in a lifetime. And it was in this most unlikely of settings that Viktor Frankl discovered the life saving and bottom line truth that I quoted above.

When Frankl allowed himself the "ability to choose his own attitude," the N**is could no longer touch him. No matter the degree to which they tortured, starved, and isolated him, they couldn't touch him because they no longer had control over his spirit.

He was a prisoner in a concentration camp, but his mind was his own. He was a free man because he was in charge of what happened on the inside.

Imagine developing such an ability for yourself. Imagine being able to decide exactly what YOU want to think or feel, rather than reacting in an unconscious and automatic manner, to whatever difficulties or challenges life presents.

Try it once and it will brighten your day. Make it a habit, and it will light up your life. I know this because I have done it. And if I can do it, anybody can.

The Difference we make doesn't necessarily need to be dramatic. We don't have to raise a million dollars for the local Girl Scout Troop, single handedly save an endangered species, or bring lasting peace to the Middle East. Sometimes the difference we make can be as simple as the smile we bring to the face of another human being - especially if it's apparent that smiling is the last thing they want to do.
When I talk about "Making a Difference," it isn't just an empty and overused sentiment I like to toss around to impress people. It's a way of life for me. I'm fortunate enough to know that it is the central core of my being, the wiring that comprises my hard drive. And I believe that every person on earth is wired the same way.
Don't just take my word for it - that will never work. Put it to the test! Go ahead, make someone's day! Put a smile on the face of a perfect stranger that looks as though he or she would rather steal your lunch. DO THIS ONLY ONCE and you can't help but notice how much better YOU FEEL! You will have succeeded in touching the real you, the part that lives in your subconscious mind, patiently waiting for something good to do.
Once its activated, it can't be turned off by any force known to man, and "Making a Difference" then becomes a way of life!
