If you are concerned about the quality of your water, especially if you are in or near a do not drink or boil water area as a result of the fires, I am a home inspector and do water quality testing. It's $290 for a comprehensive test that tests for the presence of over 75 potential contaminants including bacteria, lead, arsenic, benzene, and many micro-particles. If you want to include testing for asbestos it's an additional $100 (most home kits charge $300 just for asbestos). I know that many in LA, especially those near the fires, may now also be concerned about the quality of the water in their homes. I do water testing. My fee is $275 to test over 30 potential contaminants and bacteria. I'd be happy to send you a sample report.

Please wear a mask when going outside! The air quality is bad and filled with particles from toxic chemicals like lead paint and asbestos from older homes.

I may have inspected at least one of these or one similar in Rochester.

1916 Sears catalog home. They shipped the entire house to you by railroad car. Sears was like Ikea before Ikea.

Friends and family would come from all around to help the owner build it.

Most were built in New Jersey, New York, Ohio and Pennsylvania.

Sears sold more than 70,000 mail-order homes between 1908 and 1940. Some enthusiasts estimate that about 70% of Sears houses are still standing today.

Sears provided building plans and specifications, along with the lumber and any other materials needed. The shipment included everything from nails, screws, and paint to prebuilt building parts, such as staircases and dining nooks.

Obviously these people didn’t get their homes inspected.
