My search for the best burger in Louisville continues… this week with a Derby twist. I'm still taking suggestions on where to try, and this one came highly recommended! I met D Scott Harper at Porch Kitchen, connected to the Marriott downtown on W. Jefferson.
It just so happened our lunch meetup fell on Oaks Day, and the place was absolutely alive with energy. We waited about fifteen minutes to be seated, but it was well worth it… plenty of fun people-watching while we waited.
We both ordered the Wagyu Double Cheeseburger, a brisket blend served with fries… and got the burgers as they came. This burger doesn't neatly fit into either of Louisville's two burger categories (smash burger or large fresh patty). The double patties aren't super thick but aren't as crispy as a smash burger either. The cheese was lightly melted around the patties, and it's dressed with lettuce, onion, pickles, and secret sauce.
You may recall I like taking pickles off but leaving a little pickle flavor behind. This time I forgot to remove them… but honestly, it wasn't bad and didn't affect the experience negatively at all.
The highlight was the secret sauce. It's your classic burger sauce, but they weren't shy with it… which is exactly how I like it. Yes, it got a little messy, but the napkins were up to the task.
The most remarkable thing? Finding a quality burger that competes with the best in town and defies category. I'll definitely be back!
