Floor's done and protected, its time to move to the walls 🎨

Most people think primer is optional if you're spraying flat paint anyway. It's not, and here's why.

Primer isn't there to add color. It's there to seal the wall so every coat after it goes on evenly. Skip it, and the paint soaks into the drywall unevenly, so some spots look flatter or shinier than others once it dries.

After the primer goes on, the walls and ceiling get sanded. Not because the paint job needs it, but because sheetrock dust and tiny fibers get kicked up during priming and land right back on the wall. Sand it smooth, then apply the finish coats on a clean surface.

Spraying paint on gives an even coat, but back-rolling it right after matters just as much. The roller presses the paint into the texture so every part of the wall has the same finish. That's what makes future touch-ups blend in instead of leaving a visible patch.

Here's something most people don't know about epoxy floors.

After the colored flakes go down, the floor looks bumpy. Kind of like sandpaper and that's normal. But if you sealed it like that, those little flake edges would stay sharp forever, because the clear top coat locks in whatever shape is underneath it. Sharp edges under a hard coating can actually cut skin, like tiny pieces of glass.

That's why the floor gets scraped before the top coat goes on. A flat metal scraper knocks down all those raised edges. Scrape one way, then scrape the other way, and the bumps disappear.

Once that's done, the top coat goes over a smooth surface instead of a rough one. Same floor, same flakes, just safe to walk on barefoot.

You don't know what's actually wrong with a concrete floor until you grind it.

Old dirt, coatings, and buildup hide cracks and soft spots for years. Once the grinder strips that layer away, all of it shows up. Chipped edges, small holes, cracks that weren't visible before. That's not a bad sign. It's the floor finally showing its real condition.

Every one of those gets filled and leveled now, while the concrete is still bare. That's the only way the repair actually bonds to the slab instead of just sitting on top of it. Skip this step and rush to epoxy, and every one of those spots telegraphs right back through the coating.

Boring part of the job. Most important part of the job.

NEW PROJECT! 🚨

Cracks left unfilled are the number one reason epoxy floors fail early.

Epoxy is rigid once it cures. Concrete isn't. It still shifts a little with temperature and moisture, and any crack underneath will keep moving too. If you coat over it without filling it first, that movement telegraphs straight through the epoxy and shows up as a crack in the new floor, sometimes within the first year.

The fix is cutting the crack out wider, filling it with a flexible filler that can move with the slab, then leveling it flush before prep even starts. Skip that step and no amount of epoxy on top will hide it for long.

It's not the most exciting part of the job, but it's the difference between a floor that lasts and one that cracks again in a year.

Five years ago this house was peeling from top to bottom. Cypress siding, paint coming off in sheets.

Here's what it looks like now. Still holding, still clean, hasn't even been pressure washed in five years.

That's not luck. Paint fails early for one of two reasons: it goes on over a surface that wasn't properly cleaned and prepped, or the house never gets maintained after. Mildew is the usual culprit. It sits on siding, feeds on the paint film, and slowly breaks it down from the outside in. A once-a-year rinse is usually all it takes to stop that.

The prep work up front is what makes paint last 5, sometimes 8+ years instead of needing a redo every couple. That's the whole difference between a paint job and a real paint job.

We honor those who never made it home, those who ran toward danger to help others, and everyone who continues to carry the memories of that day.
