Back in the 80's, I use to call vinyl siding "The Great American Coverup" You could transform a shack into a jewel.
As a home inspector and someone with extensive construction experience; sometimes you have make the tough decision to recommend opening up siding to investigate and inspect for damage behind the siding. Never sits well with the seller and realtor. Improperly installed siding can attract and hide termites, and leaving to their work undetected, trap water for years, rot window sills along with covering up poor work and defects.. All of this was covered with vinyl. The 7' soffit panels were secured with one or two nails per panel.
