Heads up Gurnee, residents! Mosquito spraying will take place tomorrow night.
During the evening hours of Monday, August 17 and continuing into the morning hours of Tuesday, August 18. The Villageās contractor, Clarke Environmental Management, will conduct a community-wide mosquito abatement treatment depending on weather conditions. This spraying will be the third treatment of the season. While the spraying does not pose a risk to residents, those who are sensitive to odors or have chemical sensitivities may want to keep their windows and doors closed during the treatment.
The Village contracts with Clarke Environmental for a comprehensive mosquito control program that includes less noticeable treatments (such as retention ponds and storm sewer inlets) and more public efforts such as community-wide sprayings. The goal of the program is to reduce the spread of West Nile Virus (WNV). Reducing annoyance levels is a secondary, yet positive, by-product of the main program goal. Community-wide treatments are based on information gathered in the field (including mosquito trap data), as well as WNV and weather trends. Residents are encouraged to take action to protect themselves from mosquitoes (spray, yard treatments, reduce standing water, limit time outside at dusk, etc.). With the Lake County Forest Preserve and Des Plaines River running thru the Village, Gurnee is at a major disadvantage when it comes to attempting to control the mosquito population.
