š Last Saturday night, I rode along with the Mammoth Lakes Police Department. I wanted to see firsthand, what our officers deal with on a given shift. Not the stereotype, not the politics, just the job. A few hours in a patrol car taught me more than any council meeting could. Hereās what stood out to me:
š Staffing & housing are linked. MLPD is funded for 19 officers but running with ~12. The Townās leaning on signing bonuses & housing incentives to encourage staffing, because officers need somewhere to live too.
šø Police access to Flock cameras are more limited than people assume. ALPR ā facial recognition, and every search is logged. Regardless, resident privacy concerns are very real and deserve to stay a public conversation. What I came away with is a clearer picture of the actual limitations on what officers can access and search. But the bigger question, in my view, isnāt just what MLPD can see, itās what Flock, the company, does with our data beyond our town. Thatās worth digging into further. And according to the last Town Council Meeting, some of these Flock cameras will be removed. Though exact # of cameras to be removed was not shared.
š²Jurisdiction gets blurry fast. Forest Service cutbacks + understaffed CA Fish & Wildlife wardens mean calls that arenāt technically MLPDās job land on their desk anyway.
š° Measure L: voters said yes to funds going toward housing, public safety, road repairs, disaster preparedness, recreation, and snow removal. Yet in the 2025/26 budget, 100% of Measure L revenue went to housing. Public safety was not funded through this revenue stream, even though they were named as eligible uses when voters approved it. Thatās a gap worth considering.
Bottom line: our officers are doing hard work with thin staffing, blurry jurisdiction lines, and tech thatās more nuanced than the headlines. Ultimately MLPD deserves a Council that listens!

Thanks MLPD, we appreciate all you do. š
