I ran across this old photograph and couldn’t help but smile—this one takes me back to a moment I’m incredibly proud of. On June 28, 1990, I earned my Private Pilot Certificate with an Airplane Single-Engine Land (ASEL) rating. Yep, that’s right—this girl can fly! Ground school at the Mankato Regional Airport, led by the ever-meticulous Richard Kier, was no joke. We dove headfirst into the wild world of aerodynamics, meteorology, navigation, and aircraft systems. I remember thinking, “Wait… I not only have to fly the plane, but I need to do math while I do it?” But somehow, barometric pressure, gallons-per-hour fuel calculations, and knowing which altitude to fly based on direction all started to click.

A big shoutout to my flight instructor, JoEllen Peters—she was the amazing gal who married all that classroom knowledge with hands-on flight training. JoEllen had a calm confidence and steady presence that made the cockpit feel like second nature. This experience didn’t just teach me how to fly; it proved to me that if I could take to the skies, I could do anything I set my mind to.
