We never really know what is going on behind the scenes of someone else's life. The person who just texted you might have been sitting with that message typed out for hours before they finally hit send. They might have deleted it three times, talked themselves out of reaching out, told themselves they were being too much, and then finally got brave enough to try anyway because something inside them said you were safe.
And in that moment, whether you realize it or not, you became someone's lifeline. Not because you have all the answers. Not because you know exactly what to say. But simply because you were willing to be there, to put your phone down, to close the other tabs, and to just listen without judgment, without rushing them, and without making them feel like a burden for needing someone to hear them.
People are lonelier than they let on. They are carrying things in silence that would break your heart if you knew the full weight of it, and most of the time they are not looking for solutions or advice or someone to fix anything. They just need to feel less alone in it. They need to know that at least one person in this world has the time and the heart to sit with them in their pain without checking the clock or changing the subject.
If someone trusts you enough to reach out, honor that trust completely. Put everything else aside and just be present. Because you truly never know when being someone's person in that one moment is the exact thing that got them through to the next day.
