When styling shelves for a staging project, I use the same basic design rules I use in a full home, just stripped back. For staging, less is more. The goal isn’t to fill the shelf, it’s to let buyers imagine their own things on it. Swipe for my process!
I first select items that all fall within a simple color scheme. This room has dark green paint and a green and burgundy wallpaper, so I used a paler green, brass, and white to complement the room’s colors while brightening up the bookcase. The colors get spread throughout the shelves.
I repeat shapes as well. These bird bookends get split up to different shelves, and decorative boxes repeat in each column of shelves at different heights. The globe, circular sculpture, and sailboat all add large rounder shapes with lots of brass, so these get staggered as well to keep your eye moving.
A hint of a theme (in this case nautical, with the sailboat, coral, brass, and some mother of pearl details on some of the boxes) helps it all feel like a curated collection rather than completely random.
All together, the repeated colors and shapes, varied groupings, and plenty of breathing room give a look that’s intentional, but that allows buyers space to imagine their own belongings.
