Pine plantation timber management can provide substantial wildlife benefits when forestry practices are designed to maintain habitat diversity. Thinning and prescribed burning can stimulate grasses, legumes, forbs, berries, and browse that benefit white-tailed deer, turkey, quail, rabbits, and many songbirds. Opening portions of the canopy allows sunlight to reach the forest floor, producing the dense and diverse vegetation many wildlife species need for feeding and nesting.
