PREPARE YOUR PETS FOR THE 4TH OF JULY!
While the 4th of July is a fun holiday for humans, it can be an extremely dangerous and scary holiday for your furry family members. For animal shelters, this is one of our busiest times of the year. Last year alone, West Valley Humane Society had over 130 stray pets come into the shelter around the 4th of July.
With warmer weather, unpredictable noise, and higher foot traffic from the holiday- it is fairly common for us to have over a hundred animals come in all in a matter of days. West Valley Humane Society works tirelessly to ensure that all animals that come in as strays get returned to their families as soon as possible.
To be proactive, there are a few steps you can take before the 4th of July to ensure your pet stays home and safe this holiday season.
1. Get your pet microchipped! When microchipped, animals can be reunited incredibly quickly by allowing us to contact the owner immediately. If your pet is not microchipped yet, we will gladly help you make an appointment at WVHS before the 4th! https://westvalleyhumanesociety.org/microchips/
2. Make sure your pet's microchip information is up to date. To do this, contact the microchip company!
3. Call your Vet to get any anxiety medicine refills you may need.
4. Secure your yard/ fence. Although you should keep your pet indoors at all times, especially when fireworks are going off, it is still a good idea to make sure your yard is secured for the times they are outside, for example: going potty.
5. Get identification for your dog. Make sure if your dog wears a collar that the information on the tags is correct!
6. Create a safe, comfortable, and quiet place for your animals!
If you have any questions on any of these steps you can take to be proactive before the holiday is here, don't hesitate to reach out! We will gladly give you resources to help keep your pets home and safe this 4th of July!
(Fireworks have already been starting in some areas. It is a great idea to take these steps ASAP. Sadly, all the month-long fireworks are at the cost of the animal's comfort and safety.)
