Why has the transition from top-producing agent to brokerage owner historically been so difficult?
The transition from agent to owner is not merely a promotion; It is a change to a different profession entirely. The agent is a specialist in selling, while the broker-owner is a generalist in business management, building and managing a team “by design,” and creating duplicatable and scalable systems to provide for and keep their agents on track for success. The foundational paradox is that the traits that make a top producing agent successful - their independence, personal drive, and focus on the individual deal-are the very qualities and responsibilities that can prevent them from embracing the interdependent, strategic, tactical, and people-centric nature of a brokerage owner. It’s not as seamless of a transition as some would like to make it seem. Industry wide, more thought needs to go into this, so real estate professionals can have success at what they do best.
