Florida's lack of government regulation in Homeowners Associations (HOAs) has led to instances of financial mismanagement and little protection for homeowners. The recent arrests in the Hammocks Community Association highlight the need for change in HOA oversight and protection. State Attorney Katherine Fernandez Rundle recommends several steps to provide better protection for homeowners, including expanding the oversight powers of the Department of Business and Professional Regulation and providing criminal penalties for election fraud and the destruction of records.

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis has signed two bills following the state's recent special session. The first, Senate Bill 4-A, provides $750m in additional disaster relief following the impact of Hurricanes Ian and Nicole. The second, Senate Bill 2-A, is the state's most significant property insurance reform bill in recent history, with the aim of stabilizing the insurance market, increasing competition and strengthening consumer protections. The special session also provided property tax relief for homes made uninhabitable by the storms, as well as funding for beach renourishment and water infrastructure repairs, and housing assistance for displaced residents.
