Buying your first home in MN? Here are a few things first-time buyers don’t usually think about until they’re already in the process 👇
Heating costs matter more than you think.
Older homes can have charm *and* higher utility bills. Asking about insulation, windows, and furnace age can make a big difference long-term.
Snow is part of the lifestyle.
Driveway size, garage space, and even which direction your driveway faces can actually affect your daily routine in winter. South-facing driveways = less shoveling (locals know 😅).
Older homes are common here.
A lot of MN homes have great bones, but inspections matter — things like roofs, ice dams, and drainage come up more often here than people expect. (MN tip: those big pretty icicles? Sometimes they mean insulation issues or heat loss inside the home.)
Property taxes vary a lot by area.
Two homes at the same price can have very different monthly payments depending on taxes.
None of this is meant to scare anyone — it’s just the stuff no one really explains until you’re already looking.
I’m big on helping people understand things early so it feels less overwhelming later. If you ever have questions before you’re “ready,” my DMs are always open 🤍
