Missoula’s story begins with the untamed pioneer town of Hell Gate, Montana. Founded in the 1860s by Frank L. Worden and Christopher P. Higgins, Hell Gate was a gritty trading post just west of what would become Missoula. It was a crucial crossroads for settlers, miners, and traders chasing their fortunes in the wild American West. But along with opportunity came danger.
Hell Gate quickly earned a notorious reputation for lawlessness. True to its name, violence was a daily reality, with vigilantes often delivering swift, brutal justice. Hangings and saloon shootouts marked its place as one of Montana’s roughest towns. Between 1860 and 1865, the community was shaken by nine violent deaths, including that of saloonkeeper Cyrus Skinner, who was hanged by vigilantes. Desperado George Shears also met his end on the old Deschamps ranch (pictured), a chilling reminder of the town's chaotic and violent past.
Yet, amid the turmoil, Hell Gate was a town of many Montana "firsts"—hosting the state’s first marriage, jury trial, and church. It was also where many in the Deschamps family first settled; I was born just a stone's throw from Hell Gate.
Like other pioneering families, the Deschamps played a pivotal role in taming the wild frontier. Through ranching and farming, these early settlers helped shape Western Montana into the vibrant agricultural and cultural hub that Missoula is today. And just as my ancestors fulfilled their promise to this land, I’m committed to fulfilling yours—whether you're buying or selling real estate.
