💥 Plumbing problems can literally break a foundation. 💥
These cast iron drains are shot, leaking under the slab and likely making the foundation issues even worse.
👉 This is why a sewer scope on older homes is a must before you buy.
Take a look at these pictures from a home inspection today. What you’re seeing is deteriorated cast iron drain piping under the slab. Over time, cast iron corrodes, flakes apart, and eventually collapses—leading to slow drains, backups, and very costly repairs.
👉 Many homes across the Houston area built before the late 1970s were plumbed with cast iron. The average lifespan is only 50–60 years, and many homes here are right at (or past) that mark.
Yes—these drains can be replaced, but it usually requires breaking into the slab foundation, tunneling, or rerouting lines. It’s possible—but it’s very expensive.
And here’s the kicker: this same home also has foundation issues, likely made worse by the leaking drains undermining the soil beneath the slab. Hidden plumbing problems don’t just stay in the pipes—they can literally cause the house to sink.
This is why I strongly recommend a sewer scope inspection on older homes. Spending a little upfront could save you tens of thousands later.
