During the winter months, residents may occasionally see raccoons out and about, especially on milder days. Raccoons do not truly hibernate. Instead, they may come out during warmer winter periods to look for food before returning to their den.

Seeing a raccoon in winter does not automatically mean the animal is sick or injured. Limited daytime activity can be normal, particularly when temperatures rise or after snow melts.

In most cases, raccoons should be left alone. Animal Control should be contacted only if a raccoon appears injured, trapped, or is acting aggressively.

You can help reduce winter raccoon activity by securing trash, removing outdoor food sources, and ensuring crawl spaces and sheds are properly closed.
