Impossible question time...which one is your favorite: The Breakers, Marble House, Rosecliff, or The Elms?

The Breakers is the big one. Built for Cornelius Vanderbilt II and modeled on the palaces of Renaissance Italy, it is the largest and grandest of them all, perched right above the Atlantic.

Marble House is the dazzler. A gift from William K. Vanderbilt to his wife Alva, it was inspired by Versailles and drips with gold and rare marble.

Rosecliff is the party house. Designed by Stanford White for society hostess Tessie Oelrichs, it holds Newport's largest ballroom and a famous heart shaped staircase.

The Elms is the French chateau. Built for coal baron Edward Berwind and styled after an 18th century chateau outside Paris, it is best known for its stunning formal gardens.

Newport, R.I. — Australia is bringing a two-team powerhouse to Newport this fall for the inaugural New York Yacht Club International Women’s Championship — and Rhode Islanders know better than to underestimate competitors from Down Under.

Aside from the United States and neighboring Canada, Australia is the only nation fielding multiple teams in the Sept. 12-19 regatta at New York Yacht Club Harbour Court. Leading the charge are decorated match racer Katie Spithill and three-time Olympian Karyn Gojnich.

Spithill’s squad will represent the Royal Prince Alfred Yacht Club, while Gojnich will skipper the Royal Sydney Yacht Squadron entry.

“For me it started with people, not positions,” Spithill said of building her roster. “I wanted a group of women who are adaptable and genuinely want to be part of something bigger.”

The championship will be raced aboard the IC37, a fast, athletic 37-foot keelboat designed for high-level team competition and demanding crew work.

Gojnich said her team combines Olympic hopefuls, national competitors and developing sailors eager to grow together.

“Everyone has come forward with tremendous enthusiasm and commitment to learning and developing as a team,” she said.

A pioneer in Australian sailing, Gojnich competed in the first women’s Olympic sailing events at the 1988 Seoul Games before returning to the Olympics in 2004 and 2008.

“However, we are not there yet,” Gojnich said of gender equity in sailing. “There is still more progress to make.”

Though the Australian crews will compete against one another in Newport, there is also a shared mission. Spithill said the teams plan to train together, exchange ideas and help elevate women’s sailing in Australia.

“The NYYC Women’s International Championship fills a much-needed step in the sailing trajectory,” Gojnich said. “It creates a pathway from club racing to high-performance keelboat competition.”

American Racing Challenger Team USA has been officially confirmed as a challenger for the Louis Vuitton 38th America’s Cup, restoring a U.S. presence to one of the world’s most historic sporting competitions while representing Newport, Rhode Island.

The team is backed by entrepreneurs Karel Komárek and Chris Welch and will be led by veteran American yachtsman Ken Read, a Newporter and two-time Rolex Yachtsman of the Year.

The United States holds a storied legacy in the America’s Cup, first winning the trophy in 1851 and defending it for 132 years — the longest winning streak in sports history. Before this announcement, the 2027 regatta was on track to be the first without an American entry.

Organizers welcomed the addition, pointing to the team’s leadership and early preparation. American Racing Challenger Team USA has already secured key assets from a previous U.S. campaign, including the AC75 yacht Patriot and two AC40 vessels, positioning the team to compete immediately.

The 38th America’s Cup is scheduled for spring and summer 2027 in Naples, Italy — the first time the event will be held in the country.

Team leadership framed the effort as both competitive and forward-looking, with an emphasis on growing sailing in the United States, including expanding access for youth sailors and increasing opportunities for women in the sport.

Ken Read said the challenge is both an honor and a responsibility, adding that the focus is on building a team capable of winning the Cup and representing American sailing on the global stage.
