Happy Monday! How was your weekend? What home maintenance did you do? Many new build homes do not use the best practice materials. Our home is no exception. The past few weekends we’ve been improving a shower in our home. Showers can and do fail often and this one was….suspicious. We confirmed through our inspection techniques that the issue was thankfully just surface deep. ANSI standards weren’t fully followed which was leading to those cracked grout corners. You’ve see those right? Here is what we did.

Inspected the exterior for moisture.

Checked the crawlspace to ensure nothing was happening under the shower.

Used thermal imaging and borescope to check the shower wall cavities.

Verified that a schluter system was in fact used!

Removed grout in corners and areas that were trying to harbor microbial growth.

Replaced grout and caulk.

Used the proper sanded silicone caulk in those corners to protect the shower.

This wasn’t a high level of difficulty. It cost us less than $100 to improve. It could be hired out or DIY, but shower maintenance is a homeowner must and something to think about before there is a problem.

Laws are being created to raise the expectations and standards of those claiming they can restore homes. Celebrating some incredible news and it starts with a thank you.

CT HB 5222 is now law in Connecticut. What does that mean for the people of Connecticut?

🟢Mold remediation contractors must be certified.

🟢The ANSI/IICRC S520 standard of care is now enforceable statewide.

🟢Families dealing with mold and water damage have protections they didn't have before.

That didn't happen because of us. It happened because of the people who funded this work, showed up as volunteers, shared their stories, and refused to accept that nothing would ever change.

Change the Air Foundation is proud to have played a role. But the credit belongs to the community that made it possible.

This is our second state bill since 2022. The momentum is real and it's because of you.

Mold is a life obstacle that demands gentle care. When the body is sick, the mind is burdened, and the heart is desperate for hope, you need a team that cares deeply for what you are experiencing.

By the time you see mold in your home there can already be millions of spores present. The tricky part is these spores often hide behind walls, cabinets, or in hard to reach areas like attics. Knowing how to follow the symptoms within the home helps identify the source. It's important to work with mold professionals who ask about these signs and symptoms.

When it’s attached to a dam. Our homes here in the Southeast are not built for extreme winter weather. Many people worry about frozen pipes [and for good reason!] but many overlook their roof.

An ice dam is an accumulation often in the valley or low point in a roof and typically where another portion of the home or roof extends above. In the image, an architectural feature over the front porch extends above the roofline of the garage. Flashing is what normally protects a home from water intruding at these design points, but during a severe winter storm the ice/snow can accumulate above the height of the flashing. When it begins to melt it melts above the flashing and intrudes the wall.

The extent of damage may vary, but the most important thing to consider is how fast you get it dry. In the first 24-48 hours be sure you or your restoration team are following IICRC S500 guidelines. Waiting longer can allow mold to grow before spring gets here.
