✨Meet the Board: Chairman Chris Sandford

Christopher “Chris” Sandford serves as Director of Development for the Gilbert Community. He brings more than 25 years of experience in education, executive leadership, institutional advancement, nonprofit governance, strategic planning, fundraising, and community engagement.

Before joining Gilbert in 2025, Chris served for nearly 11 years as Head of School at The Woodstock Academy, another of Connecticut’s historic Independent Town Academies.

At Gilbert, Chris focuses on strengthening relationships among the school, its alumni, donors, families, and community partners. He works with supporters to identify meaningful opportunities to contribute through annual giving, endowment support, volunteerism, mentorship, and other forms of engagement. His extensive experience establishing advancement operations, growing institutional resources, overseeing major organizational initiatives, and cultivating community partnerships brings valuable expertise to his leadership of Covenant Shelter of New London’s Board of Directors.

✨Employee Spotlight

Our very own Amarilys Saluk has been invited to be a speaker at the Virginia Conference for Dietary Managers on October 22-23! She prepares the 2,000 meals we serve per month at the shelter AND provides Serv Safe training to shelter residents to equip them with food handling skills they can take in to the workplace.

Amarilys is a Certified Serv Safe Instructor, Registered Serv Safe Proctor and President of the Southern New England Dietary Managers Chapter.

This week, we held our first ServSafe Manager certification class for residents at Covenant Shelter of New London!

Thanks to the generous support of Impact100 Southern Connecticut, residents now have access to training that can help open doors to employment and greater independence.

Our first class included 8 individuals and 2 families, giving residents an opportunity to gain valuable food safety knowledge and a certification that can strengthen their resumes and expand their career options.

This is what meaningful support looks like — not just providing a safe place to stay, but helping people build the skills and confidence they need to move forward. ❤️
