Make Sediment Controls More Than Cosmetic

Our industry has effective tools for retaining sediment, but silt fences, wattles, and socks often become little more than cosmetic controls when they are poorly installed or inadequately maintained. To protect the environment and make these investments worthwhile, BMPs must be properly placed, inspected, repaired when damaged, and removed when they are no longer needed.

This customer followed our recommendations from start to finish, and the results speak for themselves.

Here's the process we recommend for every customer:

1️⃣ Bring in quality topsoil and establish the final grade.
2️⃣ Once the permanent soil is in place, let us take a $20 soil sample so we know exactly what your lawn needs.
3️⃣ Have the soil professionally prepared to create the ideal seedbed.
4️⃣ Apply the hydroseed slurry at the proper rate for maximum germination and erosion control, while following the soil test recommendations exactly.
5️⃣ Redirect gutter downspouts away from the newly seeded area to help prevent washouts.
6️⃣ Water 20–30 minutes each day (unless significant rain is expected).
7️⃣ Plan to mow around 30 days after seeding. In this case, because every step was done correctly, this customer will most likely be mowing in just 18–21 days!
8️⃣ After the first mowing, apply a follow-up fertilizer such as 13-13-13 or Milorganite to keep the new lawn growing thick, healthy, and green.

6-week follow up on the WSLP 109 levee and the results are exactly what we aim for, a fully established, dense stand of Bermuda grass from top to bottom.
