Knock Out Roses
I had a client request some of these popular, low maintenance roses for their landscape, and we had to make a decision between the single & double flower forms. To answer our question, we went to the experts at the LSU Ag Center.

Allen Owings, professor of Horticulture at the Hammond Research Station offered the following advice, “Bloom performance on double red and double pink KO roses is basically identical to single flower forms. Most commercial folks are now planting doubles. I would plant doubles. More petal count and same bloom duration, cycles, etc.”

Frost in New Orleans
Winter temperatures can fluctuate wildly between balmy & cold, but our average last frost date in the city is typically around the 1st of March. To be on the safe side, you probably should wait with your valuable or sensitive plants an extra 10 to 14 days.

The Japanese magnolias around town are in full bloom. Enjoy them now because the show does not last for long. The large, delicate flowers are easily damaged by strong winds, heavy rains, or cold temperatures.
