Anchoring a block and a community.

The Potier-Martin Building at 204 E. Bridge Street is the cultural heart of Breaux Bridge's Historic District. Built in 1898, it sits on the best corner of the best block in town — next door to the Center for the Arts — with 1,820 square feet of commercial space that still carries the soul of the original: a stunning "Whale's Mouth" corner entry, pressed-tin ceilings soaring 14 feet, and long-leaf pine floors worn beautifully by more than a century of life.

This is a space where a boutique finds its footing, a gallery earns its audience, or a restaurant becomes a destination. The location does the work. You bring the vision.

Upstairs, a 2,120 SF apartment opens onto a sweeping balcony above the rooftops of Breaux Bridge — views of the drawbridge, the town below, and the sky above Acadiana. An extraordinary live-work opportunity, or perhaps the finest art studio in Louisiana.

This Sunday, one of the most remarkable women I know turns 90.

Judy Brooks Reed — mother of my late, irreplaceable friend Julia Reed — celebrates 90 years of a life beautifully lived. She came from a prominent Nashville family and carries herself with an effortless elegance. She built a home in the Mississippi Delta where everyone who walked through the door felt immediately, genuinely welcome.

I've written a small tribute on the blog this week — including the story of the first time I visited Greenville, a platter of pickled shrimp I have never forgotten, and what Judy's generosity has meant far beyond her own front door.

Choctaw Hall. Natchez, Mississippi. Circa 1836.
One of the finest examples of Greek Revival architecture in the Deep South — and one of the most intact. Monumental facades. An elliptical staircase rising from the second floor to the fourth. Extraordinary plasterwork ceiling medallions. Porches overlooking formal parterre gardens and an ancient live oak canopy.

For sale — seven bedrooms, six and a half baths, 9,808 square feet. National Register of Historic Places.

The Long Table in Church Hill. Friday, July 17th.
Church Hill Variety opens its doors only on occasion — and this was one of those evenings worth making the drive for.

Chef Zacchaeus Golden — who trained at The French Laundry — brought the flavors of Mississippi summer to the table: oysters two ways, steak with chanterelles and red eye gravy, Heat of the South banana pudding. Wildflowers from The Field and Forest on every table. Forty guests, candlelight, good company.

A Southern evening of exceptional food, flowers, fellowship, and hospitality.

Forty-one five-star reviews on Zillow.com.

What people write stays with me more than the number. One client described finding “a French Quarter residence that feels like it’s been there forever.” Another — selling an incredible historic estate on forty acres in rural Mississippi — noted that I built a research portfolio from National Register forms, Sanborn Maps, historic photographs….Another worked with me as a buyer, then came back years later to sell.

That kind of trust is what this work is about.

If you ‘re considering a historic property in Louisiana or Mississippi, I’d be glad to talk.

I love Plumbago! It’s an Old world plant and I associate it with Spain, where I saw it bloom profusely at every house that was white washed.

And yes, I can go on about Plumbago. This particular Plumbago is very special because it was given to me by my good friend landscape architect Robert Leeper.

Robert is a plant genius and knew exactly where this sun-loving plant could thrive in my little, mostly shaded, courtyard in the French Quarter. Here it is in all its regalia!

Thank you Robert!
